European steel makers are selling to China and denying the local market so farmers have ripe tomatoes and nothing to do with them.

Steel is always available at a high enough price even if that price 20 times what it was a year earlier. If the price farmers can get for canned tomato is less than the price of the steel plus harvesting and other expenses, the tomatoes will rot in the field. The following season the farmers can plant other crops, wait for the price of tomatoes to increase or go out of business. That is just nature.

In any event, there will always be tomatoes and other food available at a high enough price. However, 5 billions may die if they can't afford the food but the other several billion that can afford the food will not die.
