Last night, Microsoft finally unveiled the much-anticipated Windows 11 update. The new update comes with an updated UI, performance, and productivity improvements. Microsoft also released the minimum system requirements for Windows 11 which includes Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 among other things, but the latter can be bypassed for now.

However, buried deep inside Microsoft's documentation was the webcam requirement. For now, Microsoft notes that both front and rear webcams are optional. However, the company adds that all devices (except desktop PCs) will be required to have a forward-facing webcam. This condition will kick in from January 1, 2023 and should force manufacturers to include a webcam in devices like laptops or tablets.

I have an old laptop and an old version of windows. I have to do a few workarounds, but otherwise it does what I need it to do.

When I have to replace it I will go with a Linux OS. I have identified a couple that are open source with no proprietary code.

Me too. Microsoft has been working on patches since Windows 95. And before if you count Windows 3.

Manufacturers should include a cover for the camera which the user can manually close. Either that or include a small roll of electrical tape with each laptop purchase.

I have identified a couple that are open source with no proprietary code.

So far as I know, ALL linux distributions are open source. There are some applications that are proprietary, but the OS itself should be free.

I recommend Linux Mint. It works quite well as a desktop distro.

Not to my knowledge but perhaps you know more about RH than me. I've not made use of RH in 20 years or more.
