Soil contains Organic Matter (OM), mostly dead leaves and roots. Every 1% increase in OM stores an additional 25,000 gallons (94635 litres) of water per acre (0.4047 hectares.)

I thought that Oman was largely a shithole desert? If there is that much OM under the surface, then this flood should remove that layer of top soil and sand to expose fertile land to grow crops shouldn’t it???

They have no OM which is why they have floods. In 1840 Australia had natural grasslands with as much as 37% Organic Matter. It stored tons of rain and they had no droughts in the grasslands.
