Insects cannot eat complete protein. Tom Dykstra was in Africa and saw locusts pass by organic farms with advanced levels of plant development. There are people who use Sap analysis and foliar sprays to triple photosynthesis. If you give your plants nitrogen that has been eaten by soil biology and turned into amino acids, you will save them the need to use their 10,000 enzymes to make proteins. The plants can then use their energy to make more fats which protect against heat and phytochemicals that protect the plant from disease and insects. I wrote about that here: Plant Health Pyramid

In the old days the Mormons planted their crops. Locusts came in and started to devour the crops.
Then Seagulls swooped in and devoured the locusts.
Now the Seagull is the state bird of Utah. ;)

Much of that has to do with Monsanto (GMO seeds) and chemical agriculture.
Organic gardening and the use of a good rototiller such as a Troy-bilt will make a huge difference in the quality of the crop. ;)
