UPDATE, Aug. 20, 2021: Following the publication of this article, a State Department spokesman said the administration would not be charging those fleeing Afghanistan for evacuation flights.

“In these unique circumstances, we have no intention of seeking any reimbursement from those fleeing Afghanistan,” Ned Price told The Hill.

I don't know what damned idiot in the administration thought up this horrendously stupid proposal, but the ensuing outrage has made them quickly shitcan this idea.

What may be in the offing though is too terrifying to contemplate, and as much as this willfully ignorant gov't deserves the grief, Americans on the ground in Afghanistan haven't earned it and neither have the folks at home. People are just beginning to whisper about the grim consequences of cutting and running and leaving fellow countrymen behind.

If fighting is renewed, the Americans left in Kabul and other cities become hostages to the Taliban. And there are many more out there than the 52 Americans held by Iran in the hostage crisis that ended the presidency of Jimmy Carter.
