The U.S. was in Afghanistan so that if the Pakistanis were to become even more unreasonable U.S. forces could go in and take out their nukes.

Remember that Kashmir is still and area of contention. Both India and Pakistan have nukes and if there were an exchange between them it might well cause a nuclear winter.

As of October 2013, 189 recognized states are party to the Nuclear Non- Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Montenegro was the most recent signatory from June 2006. North Korea withdrew its signature in January 2003. Three countries - India, Israel, & Pakistan - have never signed.

The US is an ally of Israel, really its unpaid muscle. It was there because Israel is an ally of India. And they did not want Pakistan's nukes to fall into the hands of the radical Muslims.

But the major reason was so that we could make money running illegal drugs and weapons.
