When fuel for the internal combustion engine was formulated they needed an octane booster.

There were two choices, tetraethyl lead or alcohol. They decided on tetraethyl lead since you couldn't make that in your back yard.

When we were on the mowing crew for Illinois State Highways, I wore a bandana over my face. My sweat would moisten the bandana and it would catch a lot of the dust stirred up mowing.

After many years of the use of leaded gasoline, the residues of burning that fuel had built up in soils along the roadside. So you certainly did not want to breathe in that dust if you could avoid it. ;)
