Some in the West have said Russia is bringing up older T-55 tank is evidence that Russia is losing.

At least Russia has older tanks they can bring out of mothballs. I suspect Ukraine doesn't.

Anti-Russian propaganda would certainly paint that as Russia losing. I do have the impression that Russia has lost a lot of tanks though. Seems they are vulnerable to hits that set off their shells stored in the tank. There's no doubt they are learning from this war and will make improvements. War has a way of inspiring countries to improve military hardware.

Tanks are not involved until the Ukrainian forces have been degraded by Russian artillery. They approach a dug in position from 2, 3 or 4 sides. They have artillery fire control over several hundred square miles. Then they begin relentless shelling. The Ukrainians are cut off from supplies. The Russians call this the cauldron. They can continue with the cauldron for several days or even more before they attack.

I have heard Ukrainian soldiers speak of their losses where half of their men in a company of 120 men died. I have heard of Ukrainians who were down to one potato a day. I saw an interview with a Ukrainian who tried to fire a Javelin and found them to be unreliable. I read of Russian Army mechanics who received medals for repairing tanks and getting them back into combat after sustaining 5 hits with Javelins. I read an interview with a Brit who had to spend several thousand pounds of his own money to buy food and supplies in the 3 months that he was there. I read of a Ukrainian soldier who got food by threatening everyone in a grocery store with a grenade.

The Russians are making slow but steady progress. They have already started shelling the first layer of defense at the border of Nikolaev province. The town of Nikolaev will soon be withing artillery range. This is important because Nikolaev is the gateway to Odessa the last bit of Ukrainian territory Russian will want to keep. There is the break away state of Transnistria that will be taken after Odessa but they are 100% ethnic Russian and will not resist.

Odessa should be surrounded by July 4th and fall soon afterwards.
