One of the interesting aspects of the Carrington Event is that the only real electric grid were Telegraph wires. The keys of the telegraphs would arc and that was the main event.
If it were to happen now we would see worldwide chaos as our civilization is based on electrical devices. Such a flare now would knock everything unprotected offline.
