The fictional lost city of Atlantis has fascinated treasure hunters and explorers for over 2,000 years. But despite many theories and decades of searching, the lost city has remained elusive.

Atlantis was first mentioned in the writings of the great Greek philosopher Plato around 360 B.C. He claimed that there was once an advanced civilization that sunk into the oceans after being struck by violent earthquakes and floods. Some say Plato invented the tragic fate of the lost city to be a cautionary tale of the gods punishing human hubris.

No written records of Atlantis exist outside of Plato's dialogues, including in the numerous other texts that survive from ancient Greece. It was only in the 19th century that some people started to imagine that there could be some truth behind these stories.

In 1882, Ignatius Donnelly, an American writer and politician, published "Atlantis: The Antedeluvian World." In his book, Donnelly said Atlantis was a lost continent destroyed by a biblical flood. Since then, many theories have claimed that Atlantis is everywhere from Antarctica to the Bermuda Triangle. (Related: Scientists discover an enormous underwater mountain off the coast of Guatemala.)

Traveling was usually a rare luxury prior to 150 years ago, so I wonder what traveling Plato may have done back in his day to both witness such a city, and live to tell the tale of its demise.

Most likely an invented concept.

IIRC Plato did not claim to be a first hand witness but was repeating what the Egyptians told him.

My own candidate for Atlantis is Doggerland. Enormous very fertile area and supposedly the the most heavily populated area in Europe. Problem with that is that there has been no evidence of any city in Doggerland.

Maybe Plato had seen sheets of Papyrus with writing on them. ;)

In his dialogues, Plato quotes an Athenian named Solon — one of the Seven Sages of Greece — who had spent time in Egypt between 590 and 580 B.C.E., claiming that he first heard of Atlantis during his travels. Solon, according to Plato, found Egyptian records that spoke of Atlantis, which he then translated.

Solon Solon (630-560 B.C.E.) was an Athenian poet and statesman who rallied against the “moral decline” of Athens.

"In Timaeus, Plato described Atlantis as having once been “larger than Libya and Asia together; and it was possible for the travelers of that time to cross from it to the other islands, and from the islands to the whole of the continent over against them which encompasses that veritable ocean.”

I read The Holographic Universe by Michael Talbot years ago. The oldest source for Atlantis was The Mahabharata Tales of which the Bhagavad Gita is a part. There was a civil war between the White people of India and the White people of Atlantis. At that time the sacred mountain of the Aryans was Mt Meru which is at the South Pole.

Millions of soldiers were dying so someone used nuclear weapons, Bhaputa in Sanskrit. This pissed off God who moved the poles from where they were to where they are today. That explains the mastodons being frozen. This caused heavy winds that took plants and trees and dumped them into valleys.

White survivors took over Egypt. Also Central America. The Indians drew pictures of the honored Whites and Blacks of Atlantis. Later on the Mayans revolted and killed them as the men of Atlantis opposed human sacrifice.

The South Pole before 12,750 BC had a climate like America. It had 2 islands. And Mt Meru was the sacred mountain of the Aryans. Aryans meaning land owners or nobles. The ancients of north India were White and owned the land.
