What were the neocons actually hoping for when they decided to engineer the overthrow of the democratically elected government of Ukraine in 2014?

We have lunatics in charge, and Trump doesn't seem to be the one who will reverse the course we are on. We need either divine intervention or have friendly aliens reveal themselves and insist on the end of all hostilities between nations, otherwise we are seriously screwed.
