The real reason: Russia has been sending a non-stop flow of cargo planes full of upgraded weapons. Iran and Russia have been working on a comprehensive treaty. Russia cannot afford to let Iran lose. I do know Russia has sent advanced electronic jamming equipment. I also know that they have sent long range radar so they will get an early warning of any attacks.

Larry Johnson, former CIA officer, thinks Russia is upgrading Iran to the S-400.

I think the Iranians will need that Russian 400 kilometer range air to air missile.

They already have the Russian SU-35 and the Mach 12 Kinzhal. The latter digs a hole 30 meters (98 feet) deep where its target used to be. They might be able to use a few Mach 9 Zircon cruise missiles. Russian Electronic Warfare might be useful.

These weapons will discourage the Americans from joining Israeli follies in the future.
