When working on Illinois State Highways, we were on a moving pothole operation on Ill Rte 68 west of I-294. There was no interchange there.

I was in the back up truck with the arrow board. Some guy hit the foreman's crew cab. One of our guys was in the pick up bed. He went flying in the air.

After the pick up got hit, there was a guy standing on left rear corner of materials truck. He hit him. That guy got his third and fourth cervical vertebrae crushed. He was just going to get married, so that accident put the kaibosh on that.

I asked the guy that was driving the car, "What happened?" He replied, "I just looked away for a moment to tune the radio."

What an idiot to take his attention away from driving when going past a work crew.

You can bet his insurance got cancelled and after that he was high risk and likely had to pay treble premiums.

I went to Northwestern Memorial Hospital since they had the spinal unit. His Dad was there. He told me, "i could have gotten him a job with any department in the state, but he wanted to work on the highways."

The last time I saw that guy that was hit, he was laid up in a house on Glenview Rd with 24 hour nursing. The doctors cut his life expectancy way back. I think he is likely dead by now. :-/
