So we just rest on the assurances of some retired military intel guy that errantly stated that ballistic missiles go straight up and "straight down" that Putin will never use nukes so the USA/NATO can just go ahead and do whatever the hell they want in Ukraine with no concerns of nuclear war?

I suspect Putin enjoys good support in Russia. Leaders usually enjoy domestic support in times of war, for better or worse.

Uh huh. Coming from the same type of people who predicted Russia would collapse under sanctions, told everyone that Russia was cannibalizing washing machines for chips to use in their jets and missiles, and were out of missiles altogether.

Oh and Putin was dying of cancer.
