DeepSeek-R1 already claims parity with OpenAI’s o1, and its dirt-cheap AI costs threaten to upend the entire industry.

With China’s tech giants on the defensive, Alibaba’s latest move says game on.

In 2023, Sam said it was pretty hopeless trying to compete with OpenAI without the massive resources they have at their disposal:

“The way this works is, we're going to tell you it's totally hopeless to compete with us on training foundation models - you shouldn't try.

And it's your job to try anyway.

I think it is pretty hopeless.”

Turns out that DeepSeek tried and proved it wasn’t hopeless.
