Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Tuesday called on other countries to work with the U.S. on global health outside of the World Health Organization, as he rejected the pandemic agreement WHO members just adopted.
“We want to free international health cooperation from the straitjacket of political interference by corrupting influences of the pharmaceutical companies, of adversarial nations and their [non-governmental organization] proxies,” Kennedy said in prerecorded video remarks aired Tuesday at the World Health Assembly in Geneva, an annual gathering of top health officials from WHO member countries. The WHO is an arm of the United Nations, and the U.S. has long been its biggest financial supporter...
But President Donald Trump withdrew the U.S. from the organization on his first day in office and stopped paying dues...
...the U.S. withdrawal, which will be official next January, has already encouraged other countries. Argentina has withdrawn from the WHO, and officials in countries such as Italy and Israel have expressed interest in doing so.
“I urge the world’s health ministers and the WHO to take our withdrawal from the organization as a wake-up call,” Kennedy said.
The U.S. did not register a delegation to attend the World Health Assembly, the WHO said.
What’s next: Kennedy also criticized the newly adopted pandemic agreement meant to prevent and better prepare countries for future disease outbreaks. The agreement “will lock in all of the dysfunctions of the WHO pandemic response,” Kennedy said, adding that the U.S. will not participate in it..."
