That’s as police work mandatory overtime; taxpayers have spent an unprecedented $1.2 billion on it so far in FY 2025. That’s more than twice what was budgeted for the year.

While Mamdani has walked back his years-long call to defund the police, claiming he won’t make workforce cuts, but he does plan to cut the police overtime budget....“If you’re interested in stealing a car, the absolute best place to do it in New York City is in the Bronx,” Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said recently, referring to Bronx DA Darcel Clark. “Why? Because chances are good that you’ll only be charged with misdemeanor criminal possession of stolen property and then sent on your way.”

Massive underwater volcano on brink of eruption after experiencing 2,000 earthquakes in a single day

Scientists monitoring a massive volcano off the Oregon coast have warned that an eruption is just months away.

Axial Seamount, the most active volcano in the Pacific Northwest, sits just 300 miles off the US coastline and nearly a mile below the ocean's surface.

It last erupted in 2015, but scientists have recently detected a surge in seismic activity at the site, with over 2,000 earthquakes recorded in a single day this summer.(This is on the western edge of the Juan De Fuca plate which on its eastern edge is subducted under the Cascade range plate. This volcano could trigger the Cascade fault which would destroy major portions of the Pacific Northwest. It could trigger Mt Rainier, Mt Hood, Mt Baker and the 3 Sisters volcanoes. Mt Rainier could send a lahar a sort of flash flood of lave, melted ice and snow, mud, rocks and debris as far as Tacoma and south Seattle.)

Hamas said Monday it has accepted a new proposal from Arab mediators for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and a hostage return deal as the Israeli Prime Minister vows to go ahead with the offensive on Gaza City.

The deal - presented by Egyptian and Qatari mediators - involves a 60- day pause in fighting and the release of around half of the 50 remaining Israeli hostages, 20 of whom are believed to be alive, in exchange for 150 Palestinian security prisoners.
