One of the primary proposed benefits of D-ribose is its role in enhancing recovery after high-intensity exercise. A pilot study reported significant improvements in energy levels (61.3% increase), overall well-being (37% increase), sleep quality (29.3% increase), mental clarity (30% increase), and pain reduction (15.6% increase) after daily supplementation with 15 grams of D-ribose for 17–35 days. However, this study lacked a placebo group, which limits its conclusiveness.

Emerging research also suggests that D-ribose may work synergistically with other compounds like nicotinamide to boost NAD+ levels, which are crucial for mitochondrial energy production, potentially improving glucose tolerance and reducing stress hormones. Additionally, some skincare products incorporate D-ribose, with limited evidence suggesting a possible reduction in wrinkles, though results are inconsistent.

Despite these potential benefits, the evidence remains limited and often based on small or preliminary studies. The long-term safety of D-ribose supplementation is not well established, and it may cause side effects such as headaches, upset stomach, diarrhea, and elevated uric acid levels. It may also interact with diabetes medications and is generally not recommended for people with diabetes, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or those scheduled for surgery. The European Food Safety Authority suggests a daily intake limit of 10 grams.
