A few months ago I asked my doctor for a fasting insulin test and she said she has never heard of such a test. I found a place online where I got a prescription ordered so I got tested. I've watched a lot of videos on the keto/carnivore diets and the doctors always say to involve your doctor before making a medication change but that's not that easy, at least in the area I live. In fact, the doctor who had never heard of a fasting insulin test also laughed and referred to my gathering of information as "listening to Dr. YouTube". A fasting insulin test measures the level of insulin in the blood after a period of fasting, typically 8 to 12 hours, to assess pancreatic function, insulin production, and insulin sensitivity. This test is used to diagnose or monitor conditions such as type 1 and type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, prediabetes, hypoglycemia, and insulinoma—a tumor of the pancreas that produces excess insulin. It is particularly valuable for identifying insulin resistance, which often precedes type 2 diabetes and is a key component of metabolic syndrome. The test may also be used to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment plans for diabetes or to monitor the success of pancreatic surgeries like islet cell transplantation.
