Based on recent testing, finding cocoa powder that's both high in flavanols and very low in heavy metals is challenging, as all cocoa powders tested have been found to contain some level of cadmium and/or lead

1
. However, some options are better than others:

Best Options:

Blueprint Bryan Johnson Cocoa Powder

Contains over 400 mg of flavanols per serving
2
Specifically tested for heavy metals with rigorous standards
2
Users report it's "nearly unparalleled in terms of flavonoids" and note "most cocoa is also tainted with Cadmium" but this one addresses that concern
2

Top Performers from ConsumerLab Testing:

Navitas Organics Cacao Powder: 25 mg/g flavanols (2019 data)
5
Terrasoul Superfoods Cacao Powder: 20.4 mg/g flavanols (2022 data), with 0.41 mcg/g cadmium
5
Products to Avoid:

Hershey's Special Dark Cocoa - Found to have high cadmium levels and very low flavanol content

8

Important Context:

Dark chocolate and cocoa naturally absorb cadmium from soil through the cocoa plant, while lead can be deposited on beans during outdoor drying

6
. The cadmium is concentrated in cocoa solids, which is why products high in cocoa (like dark chocolate and cocoa powder) tend to have higher heavy metal levels
6
.

If consumed occasionally, cadmium levels in most products aren't a major concern for adults, though they may be problematic for children and pregnant women

I take most of these already. It is more expensive than the cocoa powder so I will stick to
the cocoa powder. I was thinking of trying Ghee for flavoring though I have never bought
Ghee before.

I was thinking of adding Ghee to cocoa powder in small amounts for flavor and health.

Ghee, a clarified butter popular in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisines, offers a range of potential health benefits supported by both Ayurvedic traditions and modern scientific research. It is rich in fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K, as well as antioxidants and minerals like magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, and potassium. Ghee contains short-chain fatty acids, including butyrate, which nourish the cells of the intestinal lining and support gut health by maintaining the integrity of the digestive tract and promoting a healthy gut microbiome. This contributes to improved digestion and may help soothe inflammation in the gastrointestinal system.

Ghee is a good source of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which has been associated with potential weight management benefits, including reduced body fat and improved metabolism. It may also aid in weight loss by slowing glucose absorption and reducing sugar spikes, which are detrimental to weight management. The medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) and medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) in ghee are metabolized quickly and used as a readily available energy source, which can help sustain energy levels throughout the day.

In terms of heart health, ghee contains monounsaturated omega-3 fatty acids and may help reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol while increasing HDL (good) cholesterol levels, contributing to a healthier cardiovascular system when consumed in moderation. The presence of vitamin E, a potent antioxidant, is linked to reduced risk of heart disease, arthritis, and cataracts, and may also support skin health by protecting against oxidative damage.

Ghee has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which may help alleviate joint pain and stiffness, particularly during colder months. It is also believed to support brain function and cognitive abilities due to its healthy fat content and potential to stimulate oxytocin production in the brain, which may improve mood and mental well-being. Additionally, ghee is considered beneficial for skin health, as it deeply moisturizes, enhances skin glow, and can be used topically to treat burns, rashes, and dry skin due to its antimicrobial and emollient properties.

Ghee is low in lactose and casein, making it a suitable option for individuals with lactose intolerance or mild dairy sensitivities, although it is not entirely dairy-free. Its high smoke point of 485°F (252°C) makes it ideal for high-temperature cooking methods like sautéing, frying, and roasting without breaking down into harmful compounds. In Ayurveda, ghee is considered a "Yogavahi," meaning it enhances the delivery of herbal formulations throughout the body, and is used as a medium for detoxification and rejuvenation.

Despite these benefits, ghee is calorie-dense and high in saturated fat, so moderation is essential to avoid weight gain and reduce the risk of heart disease, especially in individuals with existing risk factors. It is recommended to consume ghee as part of a balanced diet, with attention to portion size and overall dietary patterns.

6 Health Benefits of Manuka Honey, Based on Science
Wound healing Oral health Calming a cough Ulcer prevention Digestive health Cystic fibrosis Safety FAQ Bottom line

With its potent antibacterial properties, people traditionally use Manuka honey for wound healing, soothing sore throats, preventing tooth decay, and improving digestive issues.

Manuka honey is a honey native to New Zealand. It’s produced by bees that pollinate the flower Leptospermum scoparium (L.scoparium), commonly known as the Manuka bush.

Manuka honey’s antibacterial properties are what set it apart from traditional honey. It contains methylglyoxal as an active ingredient, likely responsible for these antibacterial effects. Additionally, Manuka honey has antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant benefits.

Here are six science-based health benefits of Manuka honey.

1. Aids wound healing

Since ancient times, honey has been used to treat wounds, burns, sores, and boils.

Honey offers antibacterial and antioxidant properties, all while maintaining a moist wound environment and protective barrier, which prevents microbial infections in the wound.

Studies have shown that Manuka honey can enhance wound healingTrusted Source, amplify tissue regeneration, and even decrease pain in people with burns. What’s more, Manuka honey may help heal diabetic ulcers.

Manuka honey may also effectively treat wound infections caused by antibiotic-resistant strains, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

Nevertheless, Manuka honey should not replace the use of antibiotics without further research to confirm its effectiveness. Consult a healthcare professional before trying any complementary treatments.

2. May promote oral health

Studies have shown Manuka honey attacks harmful oral bacteria associated with plaque formation, gum inflammation, and tooth decay.

Specifically, research has shown that Manuka honey, with its high antibacterial activity, effectively inhibits the growth of harmful oral bacteria like Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (A. actinomycetemcomitans).

3. May help calm a cough

Manuka honey may relieve coughs due to upper respiratory tract infections (URIs). URIs are common infectionsTrusted Source caused by bacteria or viruses. They include the common cold, acute bronchitis, influenza, and respiratory distress syndromes.

Symptoms of URIs include cough, sore throat, runny nose, and nasal congestion. Since viruses cause most URIs, antibiotics are ineffective as a treatment and can have harmful side effects.

A number of studies suggest honey may be a safe, effective treatment for cough due to URIs. These studies also indicate that honey may be more effective than commonly used medications for relieving URI symptoms, especially cough frequency and severity.

However, you should always follow your doctor’s advice and consult them before trying any complementary treatments.

4. May help prevent gastric ulcers

Stomach ulcers are one of the most common conditions affecting humans. These sores form on the stomach lining, causing stomach pain, nausea, and bloating.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)is a common type of bacteria that’s responsible for the majority of gastric ulcers. Research suggests Manuka honey may help treat gastric ulcers caused by this bacteria.

One study examined whether dietary factors influenced the presence and spread of H. pylori in 294 individuals between 18 and 69 years old. It found that people who consumed honey more than 5 days a week had a significantly lower risk of H. pylori infection than those who didn’t consume honey regularly.

Moreover, those who consumed honey regularly were significantly less likely to have infections associated with specific strains of H. pylori that increase the incidence of diseases like peptic ulcers and gastric cancer.

5. May improve digestive symptoms

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract. IBDs, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s can lead to symptoms like:

diarrhea abdominal pain nausea vomiting

Rodent studiesTrusted Source have shown that regularly consuming Manuka honey may help control strains of C.diff, a type of bacteria that causes severe diarrheaTrusted Source and inflammation of the bowel.

6. May help treat symptoms of cystic fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disorder that damages the lungs and can also affect the digestive system and other organs. It affects the cells that produce mucus, causing mucus to be abnormally thick and sticky. This thick mucus clogs airways and ducts, making it difficult to breathe.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) and Burkholderia cepacia complex (B. cepacia) are two common bacteria that can cause serious upper respiratory infections, especially in vulnerable populations.

One test-tube study found that Manuka honey inhibited the growth of these bacteria when combined with antibiotics.

Researchers concluded that Manuka honey might be important in treating upper respiratory infections, especially in those with cystic fibrosis.

Is Manuka honey safe?

For most people, Manuka honey is safe to consume.

However, some people should consult a doctor before using it, including:

People with diabetes: All types of honey are high in natural sugar. So consuming Manuka honey may
affect blood sugar levels.
