Putin has offered to extend the limits imposed by New START for a year, but according to Russian officials, the US hasn't responded.

The last remaining nuclear arms control treaty between the US and Russia, the New START, is set to expire on February 5, which will leave the world’s largest nuclear powers with no limits on the deployment of their nuclear weapons.

The New START caps the number of nuclear warheads either side can deploy at 1,550 and also limits the deployment of delivery systems. In 2023, Russia said it was suspending participation in New START, citing US support for Ukrainian attacks on Russian facilities housing nuclear weapons, but both Washington and Moscow said they would continue to abide by the limits set by the treaty.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered the US a one-year extension of the New START limits to give time for diplomacy to negotiate a replacement treaty, but, according to Russian officials, the US hasn’t formally responded to the proposal. In an interview with The New York Times last week, President Trump appeared unbothered by the impending deadline.

Genocide Isn't a Mistake. Which Is Why the Media Cant Tell You the Truth About Gaza

by Johnathan Cook A new film about Hind Rajab's murder points to a deeply sick Israeli society, driven into the darkest of places by a racist ideology that says Jewish lives count, Palestinian lives don’t.

The Voice of Hind Rajab, a devastating dramatised retelling of Israel’s slow-motion murder of a five-year-old in Gaza, arrives in UK cinemas next week. Please take the opportunity to see it. The vast majority of Americans were denied such an opportunity when it was released there last month. Here’s what happened to the film in the US, via New York Times columnist M Gessen: em>

The Voice of Hind Rajab had its premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September and took the Grand Jury Prize, the second-highest honor. A few days later, it was screened to great acclaim at the Toronto International Film Festival. High-profile US distribution companies came calling. But then, the producers Odessa Rae and Elizabeth Woodward told me, one by one the companies peeled off.

In the end, Woodward, who has a small distribution company, put together something akin to self-distribution. The movie opens in New York and Los Angeles on Wednesday. Elsewhere in the world this film, shortlisted for the Oscar for best foreign movie, has major distributors – but not in the United States or Israel.

Guterres warns he may take Israel to world court over UNRWA

trtworld.com

UN chief Guterres warns Israel over laws targeting UNRWA and seized assets, Israel dismisses UN letter, accuses UNRWA of terrorism involvement.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned Israel in a letter that he could refer the country to the International Court of Justice if it does not repeal laws targeting the UN Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA and return seized assets and property.

In a January 8 letter to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Guterres said the United Nations cannot remain indifferent to "actions taken by Israel, which are in direct contravention of the obligations of Israel under international law. They must be reversed without delay."

Israeli authorities also seized UNRWA's East Jerusalem offices last month. The UN considers East Jerusalem occupied by Israel. Israel considers all of Jerusalem to be part of the country.

Israel's UN Ambassador Danny Danon on Tuesday dismissed Guterres' letter to Netanyahu.

EU, British ruling elite actively obstruct peace deal on Ukraine Zakharova

tass.com

MOSCOW, January 13. /TASS/. The ruling elite in the European Union and Britain see a peace deal on Ukraine as a threat to themselves and actively hinder it, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said after a webinar of the Global Fact-checking Network, GFCN.

TASS has obtained a transcript of what she said.

"The UK and the EU are purposefully and systematically blocking political and diplomatic solutions to the Ukrainian crisis. Even the possibility of peace is viewed by the ruling elites of these countries and bureaucracy as a threat to their fading global dominance," she said.

The diplomat highlighted London's role.

"In 2022, Boris Johnson, the then Prime Minister, instructed [Vladimir] Zelensky in person not to sign a peace deal that had already been drafted and even initialed. The entire matter could’ve been settled then and there, in Istanbul, saving countless lives and ensuring security for both nations and years to come," Zakharova added.

We do not want to be Americans: Greenlanders fear US threat to annex

pete keldorff, aljazeera.net

Copenhagen, Denmark – An international camera crew is being ushered out of Aaja Chemnitz’s office in the Danish parliament to make room for the next interview. Politely but firmly, the journalists are asked to leave – quickly. The busy Greenlandic politician – one of the two MPs with seats in the Danish parliament – is juggling back-to-back media requests as international attention intensifies.

Last week, she took part in a crisis meeting with the Danish foreign relations committee – a meeting with only one item on the agenda: the rapidly worsening relations between the Kingdom of Denmark and its NATO ally, the United States – driven by President Donald Trump’s push to acquire Greenland.
