I almost called the cops on a biker climbing my neighbor’s balcony. My hands were literally shaking as I stood by the window, watching this big, tattooed man in a leather vest balancing on a railing three stories high.

He looked like trouble.

And I was seconds away from dialing 911.

Then I saw what he was holding.

A bowl of food.

And just above him, on the next balcony, was a starving Rottweiler — ribs showing, barely able to stand, eyes dull with exhaustion.

That poor dog had been trapped out there for days. No food. No water. Just heat, concrete, and the sound of his own cries fading into silence.

We’d all heard him barking earlier in the week, then nothing. The tenant had been evicted and had simply left him there… to die.

I’d called animal control. They said they needed a warrant.

The police said to wait for animal control.

The property manager said it was being “handled.”

But nothing happened.

And that dog was running out of time.

Then this biker showed up. Loud engine. Leather vest. The kind of guy people cross the street to avoid.

He looked up at the balcony for a long moment, then went inside the building.

A few minutes later, I heard raised voices in the hallway.

“That dog’s dying,” he said firmly. “I’m not waiting for anyone.”

The manager tried to stop him. “Sir, you can’t break into someone’s unit.”

The biker didn’t back down. “Then call the cops,” he said, walking away.

Moments later, he was out on the balcony, stretching as far as he could, holding that bowl of food. The Rottie crawled forward, trembling, and started to eat like his life depended on it — because it did.

I couldn’t move. I just watched as this man risked his own safety to save a forgotten life.

He wasn’t dangerous.

He wasn’t breaking the law.

He was doing what the rest of us hadn’t — something about it.

That day taught me something I’ll never forget.

You can’t judge kindness by appearance.

Sometimes the roughest hands hold the gentlest hearts.

The kindest and most gentle folks I've ever met were 'badass' bikers at Spudz bar a mile east of me.

Big Jimmy and his wife, had two Rots, they only fed them raw meat, chicken leg quarters the night they showed me their incredible bar/garage in the Meadow Ghetto in New Haven, thin Jimmy and his woman and Rainman, Jay, and his wife (she hates me after clot-shots), and their rental/B&B empire.

Rainman's wife bailed me out of jail the last time around 2018 (pre-clot-shots).

The bitch charged me 15%, rather than the bail bondsman's normal 10%.

She wouldn't take me home, rather made me stay in Rainman's man cave upstairs until I was OK and cooled off enough to not go on a killing spree.

I didn't beat anybody up, but had to do 26 weeks in a non-violence class pre-trial diversion plea deal.

My 30k BTU vent-free gas fireplace is doing good.

It's 74 downstairs and 71 upstairs.

I replaced the vented gas log in Mom's villaminium with a vent-free (standing pilot) log and blocked the flue with fiberglass.

Saved my bacon (and her's during a long outage after an ice storm).

I had an 8kW nat gas generator running for her lights and everything else going 24/7.

Chris had to run me over there to do a 100 hr service in -20 conditions. I couldn't get up the hill in my 2wd red truck.

An old lady several doors down about froze to death trying to survive with her vented unit and no electricity.

Had I have known, I would've brought her down to mom's and my late-sister's joint. I feel bad about that.

Most of the houses had broken/frozen pipes, etc. that was before 2013.

I got another 8kW gas generator and replaced her A/C cutoff switch with a single circuit transfer switch which came in handy after a derecho which had most of Ft. Wayne without power to run her A/C unit.

I had 6-8 generators at one point. I have the 8kW gas unit from Mom's, Rainman has the multifuel 8kW from mom's, I sold the rest.

My first generator from the 70s was a Briggs 5hp unit I used to build my house.

It wouldn't start my circular Skil-Saw without stalling.

You had to blip the saw to get it spinning, then you could hold the switch down.
