The sum total in March of all net foreign acquisitions of long-term securities, short-term U.S. securities, and banking flows was a net TIC inflow of $150.7 billion. Of this, net foreign private inflows were $162.1 billion, and net foreign official outflows were $11.4 billion.
Foreign residents increased their holdings of long-term U.S. securities in March; their net purchases were $96.5 billion. Net purchases by private foreign investors were $111.4 billion, and net sales by foreign official institutions were $14.9 billion.
U.S. residents increased their holdings of long-term foreign securities, with net purchases of $15.2 billion.
After including adjustments, such as estimated foreign portfolio acquisitions of U.S. stocks through stock swaps, overall net foreign purchases of long-term securities are estimated to have been $81.3 billion in March.
Foreign residents decreased their holdings of U.S. Treasury bills by $16.8 billion. Foreign resident holdings of all dollar-denominated short-term U.S. securities and other custody liabilities increased by $1.3 billion.
Banks’ own net dollar-denominated liabilities to foreign residents increased by $68.1 billion.

By the time an American surgeon who contracted Ebola in Congo was flown to Germany for treatment Tuesday, he was barely able to stand on his own.
Stafford, 39, worked at Nyankunde Hospital, which is in Congo’s Ituri province, where the Ebola outbreak is centered. Days before the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the outbreak, Stafford operated on a 33-year-old patient with severe abdominal pain, Myhre said. At the time, doctors thought the patient had a gallbladder infection.

Mexico’s security crisis has reached a shocking new level in the state of Morelos. Bishop Ramón Castro Castro of Cuernavaca, who also serves as president of the Mexican Bishops’ Conference, publicly denounced that organized crime groups are now extorting poor families merely for remaining inside their own homes.
The alarming statement was delivered during the XII Walk for Peace held in Cuernavaca, where thousands of citizens dressed in white marched to demand security and an end to the violence devastating the region.
During the event, Castro revealed that criminal organizations in the community of Huautla, located in the municipality of Tlaquiltenango, have imposed illegal “protection payments” on residents who already struggle to survive in one of the poorest areas of Morelos.
“The criminal organizations have reached a level of cruelty beyond comprehension. They charge extortion fees simply for living there, for having a house. They no longer charge only businesses — they charge people for existing,” Castro declared before parishioners and members of the press.
