Salt isn’t just seasoning - it’s something most of us eat every single day. Even tiny amounts of contaminants can build up over time. Two main concerns emerged in our study:
Heavy Metals (Lead, Arsenic, Aluminum): These can accumulate in the body, affecting the brain, heart, and kidneys. Lead is especially harmful for children and pregnant women, impacting development even at low doses. Arsenic is a known carcinogen. Aluminum is linked to neurological effects when exposures get high.
Microplastics: Tiny plastic fragments from packaging and pollution. While the science is young, early data suggests they may cause inflammation, disrupt hormones, and carry toxic chemicals into the body.
We tested 7 salts for heavy metals and microplastics.
Laboratory results are often reported in µg/kg (micrograms per kilogram) or mg/kg (milligrams per kilogram), which describe the concentration of a substance in the full product. Because 1 milligram (mg) equals 1,000 micrograms (µg), larger values may be reported in mg/kg. For clarity, we converted these measurements to reflect the approximate amount present in a ~5g (about 1 teaspoon) serving.
Heavy Metals (per ~1 tsp / 5 g serving)
Celtic Sea Salt: 2.3 µg lead, 0.6 µg arsenic, 1.3 mg aluminum
Redmond Real Salt: 0.66 µg lead, 0.08 µg arsenic, 0.75 mg aluminum
Kirkland Signature Sea Salt: 1.7 mg aluminum
Morton, Maldon, Jacobsen, Diamond Crystal: No heavy metals detected
For context: California prop 65 guidelines limit lead to 0.5ug per serving, many of these salts are significantly over that level with just 1 tsp. The FDA’s daily “limit” for lead in children is just 2.2 µg. That means a child eating ~1 tsp/day of Celtic salt could already be over the FDA limit.
Microplastics (particles per gram of salt)
Maldon Sea Salt: 0.081 particles/g → ~0.4 particles per teaspoon
Jacobsen Salt: 0.034 particles/g → ~0.17 particles per teaspoon
Celtic Sea Salt, Morton, Redmond Real Salt, Kirkland Signature Sea Salt, Diamond Crystal: Not detected
Compared to other sources of microplastics like tea bags, plastic water bottles and seafood, these numbers are quite low and unlikely to represent a significant contribution to total microplastics load. Target these other sources first to reduce your microplastic load.
Best salt is Diamond Kosher salt.
Worst is Celtic Sea Salt. Lots of lead, arsenic and aluminum.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences formalized this bias with its “Representation and Inclusion Standards” for Best Picture eligibility. These rules prioritize “underrepresented” groups — defined to include women, racial or ethnic minorities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and the disabled or deaf — across every level of production.
Standard A: On-Screen Representation, Themes and Narratives
To qualify, a film needs at least one of these:
A lead or significant supporting actor from an underrepresented racial or ethnic group.
At least 30% of actors in minor and supporting roles from at least two underrepresented groups.
A main storyline or theme centered on an underrepresented group.
Standard B: Creative Leadership and Project Team
At least two creative leadership or department head positions filled by underrepresented groups (with at least one from an underrepresented racial or ethnic group).
At least six other key crew or technical positions from underrepresented groups.
At least 30% of the overall crew from at least two underrepresented groups.
Standard C: Industry Access and Opportunities focuses on paid apprenticeships, internships, and training programs targeted at preferred demographics. Standard D: Audience Development requires multiple senior executives or consultants from underrepresented groups in marketing, publicity, and distribution.
These mandates didn’t emerge in a vacuum. They accelerated after 2020 amid corporate panic over social justice pressures. The Academy framed them as promoting “equitable representation” to reflect a “diverse global population.” In practice, they function as barriers against projects centered on white characters or led by white creatives in a nation where whites remain the demographic majority.
