The July 1936 heat wave was the most intense and widespread in U.S. history, characterized by a persistent heat dome over the Great Plains and Midwest that set all-time record highs across 17 states, many of which still stand today.

  Highest Recorded Temperatures: 121°F was recorded in Steele, North Dakota (July 6) and Fredonia, Kansas (July 18).  Other notable highs included 120°F in Alva, Oklahoma and 118°F in Missouri and Nebraska.

Record-Breaking Streaks: Omaha, Nebraska experienced 11 consecutive days of 100°F or higher, while Lincoln, Nebraska hit 115°F on July 25 with a miraculous low of only 91°F, one of the warmest overnight lows ever recorded outside the desert Southwest.

Urban Records: Major cities like Minneapolis (108°F), Des Moines (110°F), New York City (106°F), and Baltimore (107°F) all set their all-time maximum temperature records during this period.

The event was exacerbated by the ongoing Dust Bowl drought, which dried out the soil and allowed the air to super-heat rapidly. The climatological summer of 1936 (June–August) remains the warmest nationwide on record, with an average temperature of 74.6°F, contrasting sharply with the coldest February on record
