US Army Abruptly Removes Top General Overseeing Forces in Europe
Lt. Gen. Charles Costanza, commander of the Army’s V Corps, was removed from command in recent days, according to a service spokesperson, though the circumstances surrounding his removal remain unclear.
Costanza’s removal comes amid a broader shake-up of the military’s senior ranks, with more than two dozen high-ranking officers removed or sidelined under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, often without public explanation. But a source familiar with Costanza’s removal said it was unrelated to Hegseth’s broader effort to reshape the military’s top leadership and not due to any political implications.
Costanza’s replacement, Maj. Gen. Thomas Feltey, had previously been Senate-confirmed for that leadership handoff already scheduled for October.
V Corps is responsible for overseeing U.S. Army forces and coordinating operations across Europe. Partially based in Poland, the corps has taken on an increasingly prominent role since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, helping coordinate U.S. support for Kyiv and managing the American military footprint along NATO’s frontlines.
The Pentagon has downsized the U.S. military footprint in Europe this year, most notably with the abrupt cancellation of a planned deployment of the Army’s 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, based at Fort Hood, Texas, to Poland.
In a statement to the Hill, the Army confirmed Costanza’s removal, saying the matter was “referred to the appropriate authority in accordance with Army regulations”.
Sources also told the Hill that Costanza’s removal was not political, nor was it at War Secretary Pete Hegseth’ direction.
This comes after Gen. Chris Donahue, then-Commander of US Army Europe and Africa, resigned just over a month ago.
Hegseth previously ousted Army Chief of Staff General Randy George, the Army’s chief of chaplains, Major General William Green Jr., and the head of Army Transformation and Training Command, General David Hodne.
Over a dozen generals and admirals have been ousted since Hegseth took over at the Pentagon.

In the heart of the Oxford Union, a supposed bastion of open debate, a single brown paper envelope triggered pure panic.
Commentator Laurence Fox stood to argue that the West is right to be suspicious of Islam. He held up the envelope and indicated it contained a cartoon of the prophet Muhammad. The chamber erupted in frantic attempts to stop him opening it. Rules were suddenly invoked. Relevance was questioned. Respect was demanded.
The Muslim president of the Union interjected that her very presence should have been enough to persuade Fox that Muslims believe in free speech.
Fox opened the envelope and revealed a cartoon of Rees-Mogg. Laughter and applause followed. The fear that had gripped the room evaporated the instant it became clear the image did not depict Muhammad.
In that moment the argument was settled more effectively than any speech could manage.
The debate took place under the motion "This House believes the West is right to be suspicious of Islam." Speaking for the motion were actor and free-speech campaigner Laurence Fox, Tommy Robinson, and writer Jonathan Sacerdoti. Against them stood Oxford Union president Arwa Elrayess, a 20-year-old Muslim of Palestinian heritage from Gaza, Rees-Mogg, and others. Outside, left-wing protesters tried to block entry. Inside, the atmosphere was already charged.

America's most powerful banker makes HUGE bet on booming city as he praises its economy and public safety
America's most powerful banker has made a huge bet on San Francisco by investing $200 million in Bay Area housing and opening a new headquarters there.
JPMorgan Chase chief Jamie Dimon designated the region as a new corporate center for the bank this week, after pledging to fund hundreds of waterfront units in the city.
Dimon praised the Golden City's booming economy and the stunning comeback it has made on public safety since the initiation of Mayor Daniel Lurie in January 2025.
Speaking at the San Francisco Chase Center on Monday, Dimon said Lurie has been 'doing all the right stuff' as crime rates have plummeted in the downtown retail hub.
Dimon also lauded Lurie's new zoning plan, but said eye-watering rent prices are still pushing public sector workers like nurses and teachers out of the California city.
(California nurses make $100,000 a year. Teachers with fewer than 30 credits start at $79,468, those with 30–60 credits start at $82,774, and those with 60+ credits start at $85,381.
