FWIW, the Manhattan project did cost two billion dollars, but the Boeing B-29 bomber project cost $3billion [probably 3 trillion today].

I use this movie as a sleeping pill.

B-29 development began more than 2 years before Pearl Harbor.  Initial design 1 year earlier in 1938.  Pressurized cabin, electronic/wired control of turret guns, engines so powerful they sometimes caught fire on start up so crews stood by with fire extinguishers when switch was turned on.  Cutting edge engineering challenge for the day.
