Major Post-WWII GenerationsBaby Boomers (1946–1964): Named for the significant increase in birth rates after WWII. This generation is often split into Boomers I (1946–1954), who came of age during the civil rights movement and Vietnam War, and Boomers II (1955–1964), also known as Generation Jones, who came of age during the "malaise" years of the 1970s.
Generation X (1965–1980): Born during a period of declining birth rates ("baby bust"). This cohort is characterized by hands-off parenting and higher rates of divorce during their childhood.
Millennials (1981–1996): Also called Generation Y or Echo Boomers. They came of age during the technological revolution and the emergence of the internet. Pew Research uses 1981–1996 as the definitive range, while some sources extend the end date to 2000.
Generation Z (1997–2012): Also known as Zoomers. This generation was raised on the internet and social media. Pew Research defines the start as 1997, marking them as the cohort directly affected by the September 11 attacks during their formative years.
Generation Alpha (2013–Present): The generation following Gen Z. While exact end dates are not yet set, they are generally defined as those born from the early 2010s onward. Some theories suggest the next generation after Alpha may be called Generation Earth (starting ~2025/2028), but this is not yet widely accepted.
Key Notes on DefinitionsNo Official Cutoffs: Unlike Boomers, later generations lack official census-defined boundaries. Definitions are based on social, political, and economic factors that shape formative years.
Cusp Cohorts: Some analysts identify micro-generations like Xennials (mid-1970s to early 1980s), who bridge Gen X and Millennials, having experienced analog childhoods and digital adulthoods.
Current Ages (2026): As of 2026, Boomers are aged 62–80, Gen X is 46–61, Millennials are 30–45, and Gen Z is 14–29
