Residents of Portland, Maine will soon vote on giving voting rights to foreign nationals

Portland, Maine
Photo: Ken Gallager On November 2, Portland residents will vote on a ballot measure to give non-citizens the legal right to vote in local elections.

The League of Young Voters is behind the proposal, as they gathered thousands of signatures earlier in the year to force a ballot initiative. The group had until July 14th to collect 5,000 signatures.

Portland is home to about 7,000 foreign nationals, mostly from Sudan and Somalia.

In March, Will Everitt of the League of Young Voters told WCSH News: “They are here, they are going to our public schools, and the city gets federal dollars from that. So they count when it comes to getting that federal money, but they suddenly don't count in November.”

In a 7-5 vote, Portland’s Charter Commission actually rejected extending voting rights to non-citizens. However, only one member of the 12-person panel voiced the opinion that only U.S. citizens should be allowed to vote in elections. Many of those who rejected it, said they simply wanted the voters to decide.

The following information was taken directly from the League of Young Voters' website:

“The League of Young Voters empowers young people nationwide to participate in the democratic process and create progressive political change on the local, state and national level – with a focus on non-college youth from low income communities and communities of color. The League makes political engagement relevant by meeting young people where they are, working on issues that affect their lives, and providing them with tools, training, and support to become serious catalysts for change in their communities.

Founded in 2003, the League has become one of the strongest youth organizations in the country fighting for progressive change.

Our long term strategy is to build an inspired, engaged and effective culture and community around youth participation. We're building permanent progressive youth-driven field and issue based campaigns that will build power to significantly impact local, state, and federal policy and elections nationwide. We expect it will take decades to achieve this scale, but we're in it for the long haul.”

In the past, the League of Young Voters has gone into county jails in an attempt to register voters.

If the ballot measure passes, Portland will join Chicago and several towns in Maryland which allow foreign nationals to vote in municipal elections.

San Francisco residents will also vote on a referendum next month, which if it passes, would allow non-citizens to vote in school board elections. (1 image)

blatant TREASON!

you're right.

according to fashionable ideology we're encouraged to adopt here in America our national sovereignty is illegitimate. Our government routinely takes actions against our people's interests and will. We're discouraged from calling our country 'America' and instead we are supposed to say this is 'the US'. In Canada and in Mexico their governments issue official documents to Americans who reside in those countries that identify us as 'united statians'. we're not even americans according to these 2 neighboring nations. The official name of the Mexican government is 'United States of Mexico'. but our government gives them the courtesy of referring to them as 'Mexicans' in official documents we issue to them. they do not return the favor to us.

our very borders are considered illegitimate. Mexico builds a wall on its southern borders and jails illegal immigrants. When we even talk about doing that the Mexican officials hold press conferences and say we're racists and appear in our lawmaking bodies and tell us that we're racists.

if you look at government policies including trade policy, monetary policy, etc., our government has no respect at all for the interests of the American people.

It is far past time for the revolution in this country to begin, and end. Every member of the government who has engineered this failure should be taken from their homes in the dead of night, tried and jailed for the rest of their fucking useless lives. Starting with every traitor in the Senate, and every traitor in Congress. Once we're done with them, we get the chimperor and ship his sorry ass back to Kenya, where Kenya's Government can reimburse us for all the flagrant spending he and his fucking family have cost the American Taxpayer. 200 million dollars to go to INDIA???

Pueblo Politics: Court overturns Arizona's proof of citizenship requirement for voter registrationJudge Sandra S. Ikuta The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has overturned Arizona’s requirement that people show proof of citizenship to register to vote. The split decision by a three-judge panel determined that the requirement to show proof of citizenship — passed by voters in 2004 — is not consistent with the National Voter Registration Act. Associate Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, temporarily sitting by designation, and Circuit Judge Sandra Ikuta, with chief judge Alex Kozinski dissenting, said Prop. 200 creates an additional hurdle, while the national act is intended ...

Yep. That's what the costs are projected at for the Presidunce, his wookie, his offspring, and their ENTOURAGE, to go to India. They're renting the entire Taj Mahal. No president in history has ever spent so lavishly.

It's far past time to impeach, especially when there is no reason for these people to go to India at such an outrageous expense.
