For one it never existed.

What the first Amend dictates is: "Congress shall make no law regarding an establishment of religion nor prohibiting the free exercise thereof. ..." The purpose being to prevent the establishment of a state church such as the "Church Of England" to which everyone, member or not, had to support. It was not a prohibition against any particular religion or church merely a prohibition against the formation of an "official" church.

As for Notre Dame the building, Cathedral, it is owned by the country of France not the Vatican.
