There is dispute on the topic. I think the F-35, as a new generation fighter, is supposed to win dogfights by shooting down enemy planes before the dogfighting actually begins. If in a dogfight, or flown by an experienced pilot of the older aircraft as if it were an older plane, the results are not good. But if instead flown by a pilot that knows and exploits the advantages of the F-35 without trying to handle it as, say, an F-18, then the results are much better. Or so I've read.

The extreme cost and secrecy is a disadvantage, because the real result in a war situation is going to be a discouragement from using the F-35 on higher risk missions or missions over enemy territory.

True story based on the Bradley fighting vehicle. Real Boondoggle. The Congress and Senate sent observers to watch it perform. The soldiers led by the author, a now former colonel, filled the gas tank full. It was supposed to have only 2 gallons just enough to fool the dignitaries. The thing blew up and almost killed a few congress critters.

It blew up. and sent debris flying. But th colonel was forced to resign. Nothing happened to the Pentagon idiots who ran the boondoggle. The Israelis were gifted some Bradleys but they had them sent to a special shop in Nevada where they took out aluminum and replaced it with real armor.
