Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were two of the most notorious outlaws during the “public enemy era.” Alongside other members of the Barrow Gang, they robbed banks, fired guns, stole cars, and even committed murder. It was a true crime story that captured the nation during the Great Depression, and they were among the first celebrity criminals. Despite the blood on their hands, they won the hearts of many, as they were inseparable up until their gruesome deaths on May 23, 1934.

Even today, they are still romanticized by Hollywood, with interest in their crimes renewed since the release of Bonnie and Clyde, starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, in 1967. Yet, the real story of their infamous lives will always remain more shocking than any fictional account.

Their weapon of choice was the Browning Automatic Rifle or BAR. Every squad in Europe during WW II had one. It was 30.06 caliber and had a larger 20 round magazine than the M-1 Garand. ;)

My father-in-law carried a BAR in WWII when he fought to make Europe safe for the Bolsheviks. He and his unit surrendered at the Bulge after they ran out of ammo (they carried 400 rounds each) and were being overrun by mechanized German infantry. Spent the rest of the war starving and freezing in a POW camp. When liberated, the German guards were as happy to see Patton's troops as the American POWs were. Food for everyone!

Once an SS officer visited their camp, and in perfect English castigated the prisoners for their complaining about the paucity of their rations. Then he opened a small can of peas, slowly emptied it into the communal cauldron, and said, "There, now you should all be happy."

I'm glad I missed it all.
