Robert Mueller's report on his investigation into Russia's election interference and the Trump campaign has been downloaded hundreds of millions of times, according to newly released federal documents.

Data obtained by Politico under a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request indicated the more than 400-page report was downloaded nearly 800 million times between its initial release in April and early July.

More than 644 million downloads came on the first day that Attorney General William Barr released the redacted document, the Justice Department's Office of General Counsel said, with at least 149 million more in the subsequent four days.

Nearly 180,000 downloads occurred on the day Mueller spoke about his report's findings in brief public remarks in late May, the department data shows.

Downloads of the report hovered in the tens of thousands most days following its release until the Justice Department, which released the data, stopped counting in July.

The data does not show how many of the downloads may be from unique visitors to the department's website, and the agency said it also does not have information on how long people spent on the page.

A senior Justice Department official told Politico that the agency took "appropriate" steps before the report's release to ensure that the website's infrastructure could handle large volumes of traffic.

"We were ready to go that day," the official said.

Hundreds of thousands of other copies were also reportedly sold commercially in bookstores or online.
