State Passes Law Requiring LGBTQ History Be Taught in Public Schools

Under a new law approved by Illinois Governor J.B. Pritker public schools will be required to teach LGBT history and the contributions of LGBTQ people. The new law, signed by the Governor three weeks ago, requires lessons highlighting noteworthy lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. The LGBTQ focused curriculum must be taught before students reach the eight grade and is scheduled to go into effect in 2020.

Via the New York Post:

All textbooks “must include the roles and contributions of all people protected under the Illinois Human Rights Act and must be non-discriminatory as to any of the characteristics under the Act,” the bill states.

“One of the best ways to overcome intolerance is through education and exposure to different people and viewpoints,” Democratic state Sen. Heather Steans of Chicago, one of the bill’s Senate sponsors, said in a news release obtained by the Tribune. “An inclusive curriculum will not only teach an accurate version of history but also promote acceptance of the LGBTQ community.”

State Rep. Anna Moeller said in a release that Illinois is the fifth state in the country to adopt a law of this nature.

“The new law’s goal is simple: to understand that people from different backgrounds deserve the same opportunity to learn and be recognized for their contributions in society as everyone else,” Moeller said.

The curriculum will include topics ranging from the country’s first gay rights organization — the Society for Human Rights, launched in Chicago in 1924 — to a spotlight on Sally Ride, the first US woman in space who was also gay, Unilad reported.

As a satire, claim that Mary, the mother of Jesus was the world's first transgender.

A magazine back around 1980 in Boston ran an article saying there was a retreat out near Amherst where people were learning to meditate and get in tune with their vegetative state of mind. People were focusing on a cabbage. They even put a note in the article saying this was a satire. People wrote in and tried to connect with the retreat that would teach them to meditate on a cabbage and achieve union with the vegetative state of mind.

While we're at it, has anyone ever noticed that it's the lefties on mass public comment boards like Yahoo that think asking if someone went to public schools earns them some mystical virtue point? I went to public school through HS, but I'm not some drooling inbred moron. Sure, my grandparents lived in a trailer park, but it was a decent one. They had sold their home and moved to be closer to their sons, but none of the apartment complex they tried out at first were happy with my Grandpa's collection of rocks. I think he kept bringing them over from the old house.

It's been more than a few years since I've read much of debate discussions at mass public comment boards like Yahoo Groups but have seen many insulting remarks through the years implying that people who've been homeschooled are ignorant and vice versa: people who've been public schooled are ignorant. My intent was not to besmirch the intelligence capacity of students in either of those groups, just to suggest that homeshooling isn't the most likely reason some people seem to be poorly educated and that they might have learned less in a more distractive public school setting. Online homeschooling has scheduled classes with teachers, student interactivity in discussion sections, tutors available if family members aren't able to help with difficult subjects, and there are even field trips, much like public schools. An advantage for homeschoolers is that they can watch videos of the classwork later if they get sick and they can watch them more than once, or portions of them, until they understand the math or science or history, etc.

I do agree with NeoconsNailed that there has long been a sytematic decline in the education standards of America's public schools and first noticed that in the Clinton-admin years. By the mid to later part of the '90s, there were very distinct and multiple indications that they'd become like Commie Kid Camps.

P.S. I have a rock collection too. : )

HOO boy.... how old are you? :-3 Already in the mid-60s they were giving my younger cousin the New Math and New Reading guaranteed to scramble young brains. It was hated then and has had the effects conservatives warned. (Where have we heard that before? Oh yeah -- 'immigration', ad inf.)

I'm not averse to telling some pitiful but bumptious younger brainwashing victim (e.g. in Youtube comments) "Let me guess: did you go to public schools?" obviously meaning "you sure are talking dumb!" I have no compunction about equating the two and my 6th sense as to their age seems infallible.

In my exp. only gliberals question the merits of homeschooling. IMHO it's tops. I have numerous young friends who were homeschooled. Admit I often wondered as they were growing up "it's great, but how will they function in this un- Christian, un-familial, jaded, beastly society?" My dumb -- they're all living normal lives and one just graduated university 'summa cum laude' (am I repeating myself again).
