DENVER — Martin Luther King Jr.'s daughter responded this week to a comment made by the chairwoman of Denver's Republican Party, Kristina Cook, in a Facebook thread: "I bet Dr. King wishes he'd had a sniper on his side that day."

The comment caught the attention of Bernice King, Martin Luther King Jr.'s daughter. Wednesday, she tweeted, "Listen to his speech 'I've Been to the Mountaintop,' delivered the evening before he was assassinated. My father knew his time on earth was short. He stood by his non violence philosophy. He would not have wanted a gun battle on his behalf. Don't use him for this."

My father knew his time on earth was short.

He stood by his nonviolent philosophy.

He would not have wanted a gun battle on his behalf.

Don’t use him for this. #MLKpic.twitter.com/qQEgm4dNzQ

The exchange started on Facebook, when a picture of Cook was posted in the comment section by the president of Denver's Young Democrats, Justine Sandoval. “I had just posted to clarify that was her and the conversation went from there," Sandoval said.

The picture shows Cook holding a rifle. Cook later, down the thread, posted her Dr. King comment.

“That comment was, 'I wish that doctor Martin Luther King was still with us, I think that he would help heal the division that we see,'" Cook said. "That was really what was going through my head.”

“If you know anything about Dr. King you know that he was a man of non-violence," Sandoval said. “I think it’s a discredit to Dr. King and his legacy who was a man of peace and a man of unity to say something like that.”

Cook said she has reached out to the King family and would like to discuss everything, but has not heard back.

“I can see that there are some people obviously that think it wasn’t appropriate," she said. "Honestly, I’m baffled. I think we each approach the world in a way that reflects that how we see the world inside of us. I tend to see people’s best foot forward and so I hope that people who react to me the same way."

When I lived in Chicago, I knew this white guy who was a guard at the Cook County Jail. When the news hit that King was killed, the leaves for all the guards were cancelled.

One black guard, because he had a good job was able to get a mortgage on a 4-flat. He lived on the 2nd floor. When he opened to door to go to work there was a black guy standing on the lower landing. He was ready to light a Molotov Cocktail.

The black guard said, "Whatchoo think you doing?"

The black guy said, "I'll show whitey. I'm gonna burn down this building."

The black guard pulled his pistol and killed him right where he stood.

My friend asked him, "How are you going to explain that?"

The black guard said, "When they come along and pick him up, it's just another dead nigger."

Good blacks call bad blacks niggers too. :-O

LOL, I love that story >;-)

MLK's nonviolence is a joke, of course -- just like everything about him. Endless one-way racial violence is his real legacy. Get this fool

You can see where he got his middle names by the basic chronology. So what would "Mahtin" have to say about THAT!

From all that I've read, Martin was much like our first black president (BJ Clinton) and was mainly interested in the pussy. Jesse and Al were more interested in all the honkey-money that they could shake down as poverty-pimps.

I could be wrong...

I do remember this horrible crime. Justice was served, but nothing can bring back the lost girl. ;)

Wow -- where were you living at the time? Didn't think it had been reporter beyond greater Charleston.

It was a niggeritual murder inspired by Malcolm X-crement's hate literature -- happened right when I moved to SC and got politically active here. The crime was the first subject of our state Council of Conservative Citizens newspaper -- besides the C-flag fight of course.

hornets

When I was a beekeeper, a wasp would swoop in and grab a honeybee, bite its head off and carry it away as food for its young. Just the law of the jungle. ;)

where were you living at the time?

In northwest suburbs of Chicago. Some crimes like the one in Charleston did make some national coverage.

But it is up to the Editor of each newspaper what other stories they pick up. ;)

I'll bet they're even more systematic now nationwide about keeping racially- incorrect news from escaping the immediate area.
