Houses are becoming so unaffordable for debt-stricken millennials, young people are now literally living in decorated sewer pipes.

Yes, really.

They’re called OPod Tube Houses and literally consist of reclaimed bits of industrial piping renovated inside with other left over pieces from building sites to make them into micro apartments.

“Constructed out of low cost and readily available 2.5m diameter concrete water pipe, the design utilizes the strong concrete structure to house a micro-living apartment for one/two persons,” states a promo for the product. “OPod Tube Houses can be stacked to become a low rise building and a modular community in a short time, and can also be located/relocated to different sites in the city.”

The pods are placed on spare bits of land and stacked on top of each other, allowing people to live their dream of being a human ant in a colony.

The sewer pipes are becoming more widespread in Hong Kong, where the cost of living is prohibitively expensive, but expect to see the trend transfer to the west very soon.

“The objective of architecture like the “sewer pipe house” isn’t to help humanity, but to humiliate and demoralize its occupants and those who live in the surrounding area,” commented one Twitter user who highlighted the issue.

young people are leaving college an average $30,000 in debt and getting jobs that pay an income which will never keep up with the rate of inflation.

Property ownership is freedom but the future for any generation other than boomers appears to be a lifetime of rent serfdom.

Anyone able to read this "snivel" should be able to come up with a very practical observation.

We have a Debt Based interest bearing currency. We have generated more Unpayable Debts than anytime in history. A Depression is a period in time when Unpayable Debts are cancelled en masse so we are headed to the worst Depression in history. We are also way over populated. We are entering a Grand Solar Minimum. Food will become scarce. Billions of people will die.

By 2050 India is forecast to have more people than China.

That projection is for Asia to have five billion people, give or take a few million. There is NO new arable land being added. Therefore, man does nothing, we will have death and destruction by war, starvation and or pestilence.

We are entering a Grand Solar Minimum. During the Maunder Minimum, the price of wheat rose 400% in the UK. China slaughtered 300 million hogs. They responded in part by killing half on the 1.8 million donkeys in Kenya for meat. We are entering Global Cooling. Food will become scarce.

PS: China has several hundred million more people than they say.

I think they mean storm sewers, not sanitary sewers.

But in older cities like Chicago, they have combined sewers that take rain and sanitary together. In the suburbs they have separated the two.

Chicago was recycling their sewage sludge. They would bag up the dried sludge with the label, Nu-Earth. They found out later it was contaminated with heavy metals like Lead and Arsenic. ;)

Those pipes seem to be slightly larger than a jail cell. But at least you can get out and into the real world.

Maybe the bus driver who makes $35,000 a year and cannot afford housing and must sleep in his van could get one of these units. ;)

Yeesh! But what did they expect? And what was Nu-Earth used for? Mebbe an attempted Pet Rock revival.

what was Nu-Earth used for?

It was marketed as a soil amendment. So if you put that in your garden you were exposing people to the heavy metals in it. ;)

Two bits of ignorance in this article: there are no "spare bits of land" and property ownership is not freedom. You just owe a different master.
