Submitting to authority has been an element of Chinese culture going back 4 or 5 thousand years. I expect after that length of time, it's ingrained in their DNA. That this culture makes up about 20% of the world's population is a very bad thing.

Hong Kong seems to be showing some resistance to the Borg though.

Alas, it's only the usual round of suspects pulling a dialectic monstercrime..... I had big hopes of the Chinese peacefully overwhelming and flattening communism by their growing love of things and ability to stock them up -- but I guess it's going to be a gradual return to 1960 for them, prolly for good. Besides remaining easily cowed by officials, Chinks don't seem to have any culture of remembering or condemning the horrors under Mao et al.

Just a statement of fact. In a Grand Solar Minimum food becomes scarce and expensive. Time to start a garden even if all you do is sprout seeds indoors. The price of wheat rose 400% during the Maunder Minimum.

I read once a sociologist professor/doctor type theorize that China is basically a single large & flat land mass without natural, internal barriers, which over time simply was conducive to the entire place being ruled from a central location. Europe, on the other hand, has many like the Alps and pyrenees and the English channel and northern sea. That setup made it difficult for central rule and actually promoted diversity of culture and language, and as an offshoot, independent thinking.

Interesting theory.

English channel

The English Channel was a natural barrier and kept out most invaders except the Romans and Vikings and later on the Normans.

Now they have the Chunnel under the Channel and it has allowed virtually unchecked immigration into the British Isles.

Across Europe there were many languages, some of which dated back to Roman times. Romanian was the last of the Romance languages. ;)
