There were a lot of other triggers that led to the depression in the 30s. One of them was the Crash of '29 when the stock markets collapsed.
Then when FDR abrogated the gold standard and forced people to turn in their gold and gold certificates. The goobs then revalued gold from $20 to $35. It was a nice, tidy profit for them. The smart people kept their gold for their progeny.
If you had a safety deposit box at the bank, there was a Treasury agent there in the 30s to see just what you had in there. If it was 400 oz gold bars, the agent confiscated them on the spot.
The Great Depression happened because the FED deflated the money supply. Cash was scarce and I recall my Mom telling us they all got coal in their stockings at Christmas time since the family had no money. They did their own shoe repairs too. The cobbler cost more than they could afford.
I work with a guy whose parents recently filed for bankruptcy. I asked if they have come out of it. He said they did. I told him to be ready for them to be inundated with credit card offers. The law says you can only claim bankruptcy every seven years.
