VIDEO: The USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier gets underway for sea trials

Navy officials enlisted the help of executives with the Florida-based Carnival Cruise Line, the largest cruise company in the world, to identify solutions for the ongoing maintenance issues that have stranded a majority of the service's aircraft carriers in non-deployable status, Business Insider reports.

Naval Sea Systems Command chief Vice Adm. Tom Moore "a few months back" met with several members of the Carnival Cruise Line team (including retired Vice Adm. William Burke, now the company's chief maritime officer) to discuss "how we have been able to do shipyard maintenance as quickly and effectively as we do," a Carnival spokesman told Business Insider.

A spokesman for Navy Secretary Richard Spencer confirmed to Business Insider that the meeting took place, noting that the secretary "believes the Department of the Navy must make every effort to retain and expand our competitive edge."

The Navy has dropped the ball in this instance. If we really had a war, like Vietnam going on, these carriers would be in prime condition. ;)

Its not just the carriers. The crews and officers are not properly trained.

We do not have ships like the USS Missouri and USS Iowa any longer. Those 16" guns could shoot 23 miles away.;)

The USS Iowa had a main battery of Mk 7 16"/50 caliber guns- the barrels were 50 times long as wide. They could shoot different shells, one as heavy as 2700 lbs. The max range was given as 41,662 yards- or a bit over 23 miles.

Carnival Cruise Lines doesn't have any trouble with women at sea :-) Maybe their training is better than the US Navy.

As I understand the problem, the US armed forces has a problem in recruiting and retaining personnel. Specifically, the Navy does not have the time to train officers correctly. When an officer is promoted, he is given a DVD and expected to learn his new duties by watching it.

The pay for the military has not kept pace with other .gov workers. When enlisted people are eligible for food stamps and assisted housing,that situation will not attract the brightest bulbs in the knife drawer.
