She sent her son to a private school.

I knew a woman in NYC who had a son. He was in a private school there. She was working two jobs to pay the bills. She wanted to push her son off on me so she could go to Syria as a cook for the U.N. so she did not have to pay the Nanny full time. I put the kabosh on that pretty quick. She did not intend to make me his legal guardian while she was out of the country either. :-/

The Chicago Teachers Union had the best pension fund since they made investments that did not lose money.

Other pensions like the Teamsters (726) pension of city and state highway workers had to take 20% cuts in pension payments since those funds made poor investments that lost money. ;)

Quite a few can, but that's not what the woman is talking about. She wants the taxpayers to pay tuition for blacks at private schools.

Charter schools, at least in NYC, do a good job of providing blacks and other poor people with a safe and half decent education at public expense.

We have a local private school that has more students passing AP exams than the larger public schools. The private school charges $4,000 per year less than the public schools charge taxpayers. Vouchers would give students money to go go private schools and save Big Bucks for taxpayers.

What do you have to do to get a voucher for a private school? Pass a IQ test? Have parents well below the poverty line. Be an acknowledged minority. Or win a lottery?

Except for the IQ test all of those determinations would just serve to junk up the private school and might not benefit the student.

NYC's charter schools draw from black and hispanic communities, and not all of these schools succeed. (Rich parents do not apply to the charters but they could as they are on a firt-come-first served basis until they are oversubscribed and then its by lottery.) But the ones that do like Success Academy, outperform even the highest ranking public schools on the standardized state tests.

Everyone gets a voucher. Schools can have admission and behavior requirements. Black kids will get black schools adapted to their needs.

Don't think that's what the woman had in mind. I inferred she wanted to be able to send her child to an expensive private school on the taxpayers' dime, perhaps because the public schools were inadequate and/or dangerous.

Where's the choice in that sort of voucher system?

One of the most successful charter schools in NYC is in Harlem. All attend voluntarily, at least as far as their parents are concerned, i.e., you have to ask for an application. Demographics are as follows:

data.nysed.gov/enrollment...=2018&instid=800000084527 : 59% black, 38% hispanic, 1% white and 1% interracial. Their performance on the standarized NYS tests is over 90% pass rate, something the best public schools cannot achieve.
