If it were just cutting off military aid in return for the troops leaving, would be a good deal for both. But Trump is threatening more.

Trump knows there's no economic benefit to the US in being there, so why is he being such a hard ass about this? This would be where his patriotic pride gets in the way.

Trump is a realist/pragmatist.

TRUMP did NOT put us into the Middle East, nor Korea, nor Europe.

Carping by those that are short on history is an indicator that there is a lack of history and its consequences. FDR thru Obama entangled this country, for good or bad, in far flung reaches on earth.

As an indicator, it is interesting to understand why Russia does not want us to leave Asia. With it Obama put our military back in Australia. Dumb? NO...Trump will NOT remove us from Australia.

The US imposing sanctions works as leverage for US political will only so long as the world utilizes the US financial system in everyday business. The more sanctions are imposed on various entities, the more they will be compelled to find other means of conducting business, and the more they do that the less they will care about US sanctions.

Right -- do you see any hope of that on this?

There are the BRICS countries.... Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa that are collaborating on an alternate, not US or dollar based system. Those 5 countries represent about 41% of the world's population, compared to the US alone which is only about 6%.

Only problem is the C in BRICS. China is no friend of civil liberties and remains communist, and is in the process of expanding its influence worldwide. It's a good thing we put sanctions on them, expelled their diplomats and are recognized all through the west as the root of all evil. Oh, sorry, that's Russia. With China, we're signing great new trade agreements.

Think of campaign contributions. Trump wants a billion dollars to win in November. Just has to hope hat the Mideast does not blow up and that the economy does not blow up. No room for statesmanship just for the cash to run ads and PR.
