Mark Esper defends removing USS Theodore Roosevelt commander who sounded alarm over coronavirus

Defense Secretary Mark Esper on Sunday defended the recent removal of the commander of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, who warned that action was needed to save the lives of his crew from an outbreak of coronavirussaying the move is an example of how "we hold leaders accountable for their actions."
"I think acting Secretary (Thomas) Modly made a very tough decision -- a decision that I support. It was based on his view that he had lost faith and confidence in the captain based on his actions," Esper told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union." "It's just another example (of) how we hold leaders accountable for their actions."
Capt. Brett Crozier was relieved of his command last week by acting US Navy Secretary Thomas Modly, for what Modly called "poor judgment," going outside the chain of command and too widely disseminating the memo over an unsecured system.
Asked by Tapper if a current investigation into Crozier's actions should have been launched prior to his removal, Esper said such a decision was "not unheard of" in the Navy.
"All the services at times relieve commanders without the benefit of an investigation up front because they have lost confidence in them. It's certainly not unique to the Navy. The Navy has a culture of swiftly and decisively removing captains if they lose confidence in them," Esper said.
CNN previously reported that as of Saturday, 155 sailors from the Roosevelt have tested positive for the virus, according to the Navy.

Given the video I saw, that statement just doesn't make sense in this case. It's one thing to have a standing formation all shouting "horrah, horrah, horrah" in unison, but quite another to see a general crowd of them all cheering and clapping on their own.
If you've not seen it, check it out. I think your guarantee is one you'd have to make good on, in this case.
Why would these sailors do that? Perhaps because they would know what was going on inside that ship over the last few weeks better than anyone shore bound.

Having attended two such farewells in the Air Force, it was a joke.
In contrast my last attendance for a military commemoration was at NSA in Washington, with 900 other civilians and military in attendance, gathered from around the nation. That was a salute to comrades shot down by the Russians AND DENIED THEIR DUE BY THE GOVERNMENT AND THE MILITARY.
That was respect for totally unknown people. They paid for the respect with their lives and were denied.

My only neighbor came home from Viet Nam a physical wreck. The military and VA cast him aside. After a stroke two weeks ago, the VA sent him to a convalescent home. Yesterday he was brought home and he has the virus.

The one video I saw was in ships fighter hangar. Those people are NOT a part of the ships permanent crew. They are TDY usually for three or six months to a carrier. Otherwise they are landlubbers.

I do have young friend that is SQ. commander of F/A18 Navy fighter jet SQ. Few months ago he did his first three month deployment on aircraft carrier in Middle East. For 18 years he has been on his quest for Star rank. Now after his first and last deployment and 18 years,all he wants is twenty years, retirement and out. His brother is Air Force doctor, I told him make sure his brother leaves active duty with some kind of disability that would prohibit flying duty.
I was only PNC rank in the Air Force, Fred not a clue about that.

Good question...From experience, we were told to turn out at a certain time in class A uniform. We were seeing someone off etc etc. Ten thousand men and women standing in the hot sun, to wave goodbye to someone we did not know nor care about. Meat wagons were in a line behind the ranks. As people keeled over the medics dragged them out and hauled them away.
That was my second and last one.
Imagine ten thousand people, one day wasted at tax payer expense, that has always been the bane of the military and will never change.
