These were the few black guys I worked with on State Highways. Not all of them were into drugs and drinking.
One of them got his GF pregnant. We asked if he was going to marry her. He said, "She just wants what she got coming." In other words she wanted to get on ADC and get government benefits. We shamed him into doing the right thing and marrying her. Likely that child is grown up by now.
One guy they called "the bone crusher" since he would go around do collections on juice loans from El Rukn.
One time they wrote him up for swearing. He went to his grievance hearing and told them, "They got us pissing next to trucks and behind trees like dogs. You think there ain't gonna be a little swearing goin' on out there?" He won his grievance and got his day's pay back. ;)
