Even on their most mundane daily errands the horrifying discrimination faced by pointy headed people is relentless.

Read up sometime on the state o things during laughably-misnamed Reconstruction that called the original KKK into being.

The economic and social order of the Deep South had been destroyed and a brutal military occupation / repression had taken its place. A large percentage of the freed slaves became homeless, landless, and jobless. They were used by "carpetbagger" opportunists to seize land and control of local governments.

The KKK was a militia that fought back against Reconstruction control of local governments and punished cooperation with land speculators. With the continued conflict, the economic recovery was slow and the northern migration of former slaves turned from a pre-war trickle to a flood. Texas and New Orleans (distinct from the rest of Louisiana) escaped the complete collapse of the Deep South and were also destinations for the freed slaves. East Texas had a thriving owner operated farm community of escaped slaves in the "Big Thicket" rain forest dating back to a generation before the war.

The Mexican government outlawed slavery in Texas prior to independence, and there had also been resistance to slavery from the centrally located German immigrants. Slavery loomed as a ponderous issue during negotiations for annexation to the US and in the compromise of 1850. The miserable practice grew rapidly in eastern Texas with the cotton plantations (the historic Levi Jordan plantation in Brazoria was a typical success story, owning 134 slaves valued at more than the land they worked), but the practice was not deeply embedded in central or western Texas culture. Texas was not invaded and after the war did not experience the extent of displaced slaves as the D.S. did; many continued in their previous work on plantations. The KKK was present in East Texas and New Orleans, but was not in the same existential struggle that took place in the D.S.

Ironically, it was the success of the blacks in New Orleans and in the East Texas woods in the latter third of the 19th century that caused the KKK to turn from defender to oppressor. In the 1870s Jim Crow laws were passed, and in the late 1880s there was a militia battle just south of Conroe in Fort Bend County between the majority black/white faction (Woodpeckers) and the whites only faction (Jaybirds). The governor stepped in with troops to establish whites only control, thereafter blacks were systemically excluded from political life. Racism in places like Conroe and Brazoria was as brutal as anywhere in the South for the next hundred years.

Ever heard the old saying -- pity the people whose slaves come to rule over them? It was chaos and the pits of hell. Nigger violence, rape and thieving are what brought the KKK into being. NO movie has ever given an inkling of the reality of it -- most regrettably including Gods And Generals.

The yankees' notion of just freeing the South's slaves pell-mell was certifiably insane -- another Big Idea totally disconnected from reality. Then of course the heroic yankee states passed laws banning entry by the noble savages -- why the vaunted Underground Railroad ended in Canada. Hell, Oregon was founded for white supremacy.

I seriously doubt the 19th-c. KKK ever did anything to stop black progress. To my knowledg it it was all about keeping America white and peaceable up thru the 1940s, not burning blax' house down -- unless they'd really asked for it.

The Union simply had no case, and a great many Northerners know it. In WBTS reenactments nobody wants to play the invaders half the time.
