Inmates in the Los Angeles County prison system are deliberately trying to contract the coronavirus so that they will be released, according to Sheriff Alex Villanueva.

First, they would have to find someone with Covid. And should they succeed in contacting it, it would be an altruistic gesture as they would not be released. Some of the other prisoners might benefit, though.
