Before Jack Webb was Joe Friday he was Jeff Regan PI. In one radio episode he was visiting his partner and friend in the hospital who had been shot. His boss was Jewish. He yelled at Jack Webb and told him to get out there and earn some money. The hospital (in LA) was charging the outrageously expensive sum of $20 a day for the ICU!! That was lots of money back then.

I am. I am way beyond even the most healthy. The people in my apartment house are so sick that the mailman is afraid to deliver to us. People here get the flu twice a year but I haven't had the flu in 10 years. And I never had a flu shot.

As far as I can tell, the bill doesn't amount to a hill of beans. Assuming he's not quite wealthy, it won't be paid. At 181 pages, the hospital could have saved a portion that cost by not printing it out.
