Pelosi Pours Gasoline on the Fire, Encourages Leftist Mobs Tearing Down Columbus Statues

Looking for strong leadership to put its foot down and say “NO” to the left-wing thugs tearing down statues of America’s forefathers? You won’t find it in the Democrat Party.

Earlier today, Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi took a question about the protesters in her native Baltimore who threw the city’s statue of Christopher Columbus into Inner Harbor. Her answer was, shall we say, disinterested.

Pelosi said Thursday she’s most concerned about looking forward and she’s not wedded to physical monuments and tokens of the past. “I don’t even have my grandmother’s earrings,” Pelosi said.

It’s no secret that Democrats have no interest in preserving society’s understanding or appreciation of America’s past; it’s easier to “fundamentally transform” a country if people think the way the country is and used to be is insignificant at best, or evil at worst. So it’s bad enough that Pelosi is officially neutral on whether Baltimore continues to honor the man who discovered the land that became America.

The full scope of Pelosi’s answer is even worse, because she can’t even be bothered to fake opposition to mob violence or vandalism of public property. As Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy responded, “Her job is to write laws. Instead, she encourages mobs to break them. She is complicit with criminal activity, plain and simple.”

As disgraceful as Pelosi’s answer is in the abstract, it’s also troubling for what it signals about the state of the broader Democrat Party. While Pelosi is an extreme leftist from a far-left California district, she has always taken a more pragmatic view of national Democrat messaging, prodding her party to emphasize kitchen-table issues over fringe causes.

The fact that she’s expressing such deference to the rioters suggests that she perceives their cause to have gone mainstream enough that there’s no political downside to legitimizing them.

That’s not true — at least, not yet — but it will be in the future if Republicans don’t forcefully push back against them and make Democrat pay a heavy price in November. Because if they manage to take back Congress and the White House while tolerating and/or endorsing the dismantling of America’s heritage, it will open the floodgates to an assault on US history from which we may never recover.
