During the fanfare of his news conference, de Blasio declared, “We now have fewer people in our jails than any time since [World War II], and we are safer and better for it.”

Shootings in New York City are up 277% for the week compared to numbers from 2019.

On Monday alone, 17 people were shot across the city, 12 of them in Brooklyn. A high-ranking officer called those numbers “astronomical” for a Monday.

Recent victims of the crime wave include a 1-year-old shot and killed in Brooklyn on Sunday. Since black lives only matter when they die in confrontations with white police officers, de Blasio must have seen fit to indulge in gallows humor.
