Police in Portland said on Friday night that they were attacked with rocks and chunks of concrete, after the 72nd-straight night of protest descended in to violence once again.
Officers said that some of the protesters were attempting to blind officers by shining lights in to their eyes.
Amidst the chaos, the police tweeted their apologies to the local residents for the disruption and noise, with officers using a sound truck to blast warning to protesters to leave the scene, which they declared an unlawful assembly at 9.45pm.

There is an obvious response mode to assault with intent to do great bodily harm.
And it ain't nice.

Once in a while at a concert, someone would have one of those red laser light pens and shine them at the stage. That would distract the band members and if we caught the party with the laser light we would confiscate it.
One night someone in the upper level had one of those lasers. I went up there to try and locate it.
I figured I had him pin pointed and when he pulled it out and flashed it again I reached in the row and grabbed it from his hand.
I met two cops coming up the stairs and told them, "I got the laser light." So they turned around and went back downstairs.
I sold that laser to one of the girls on the crew for $5. ;)

It was a guy that had the laser light. But doing anything more than simply taking it from him might have put me in harms way since he had a few buddies with him, and I was alone.
Then getting into a fight in a place that was away from my assigned position wasn't necessarily the best option available. ;)

Some people aren't so sanguine about what needs to be done with the reckless assholes in places like Portland.
