This was a famous race at the time. The movie Seabiscuit was made about the competition. War Admiral was the regal ruler of racing, the son of the great Man O'War (though Seabiscuit was related as well) who had won racing's Triple Crown in 1937, an aristocratic horse that seemed unbeatable.
Seabiscuit was foaled in Lexington, Kentucky, on May 23, 1933,[2][3] from the mare Swing On and sire Hard Tack, a son of Man o' War.[4] Seabiscuit was named for his father, as hardtack or "sea biscuit" is the name for a type of cracker eaten by sailors.[5]
This was probably the biggest racing event of 1938.
